Aruba is warm, breezy and casual — which makes it easy to overpack for and just as easy to forget the one thing you actually need. This is the packing list we would hand a friend flying in: the essentials, what to leave at home, and the stuff you can pick up once you are here.
First, the climate in one paragraph
Aruba sits outside the hurricane belt and stays hot and dry most of the year, usually in the mid-to-upper 80s°F. The constant trade winds make it feel gorgeous rather than sweltering — but they also mean strong sun and the occasional flyaway hat. Pack for heat, sun, and wind, and you are 90% there.
The absolute essentials
- Reef-safe sunscreen — the sun is stronger than it feels with the breeze.
- Sunglasses and a hat — ideally one that survives the wind.
- Refillable water bottle — Aruba’s tap water is desalinated and excellent, so skip buying plastic.
- Sandals + one pair of walking shoes for rocky spots like the Natural Pool.
- A light layer for over-air-conditioned restaurants and evening breezes.
Clothing: keep it light and breathable
Days are swimsuit-and-cover-up casual; evenings are “nice shorts and a clean tee” casual. You rarely need anything formal. Breathable cotton beats synthetics in the heat, which is why garment-dyed cotton is the island standard — soft, forgiving, and better with every wash. A couple of good tees and one light hoodie for the plane and breezy nights will carry the whole trip. Check the weather by month if you are traveling in the cooler, windier season.
What to leave at home
Heavy shoes, formalwear, and a third of the clothes you were about to pack. Aruba runs relaxed. And here is the packing hack most people learn too late: do not save luggage space for souvenirs. Shop for the fun stuff — tees, hoodies, gifts — and have it shipped straight home instead of playing suitcase Tetris on the way back.
The night-before checklist
